Today on the show, we welcome Chris Kresser. Chris is a globally recognized leader in the fields of ancestral health, Paleo nutrition, and functional and integrative medicine. He is the author of the New York Times best seller, The Paleo Cure and has just released his brand-new book titled, Unconventional Medicine. More and more people around the world are starting to recognize that the problems we are facing in the current healthcare system are not ones that someone else can fix. Recent statistics suggests that we are going to have a shortage of over 50,000 primary care providers by the year 2025. One in two American's now have chronic disease, 30% of kids now have a chronic disease, and the average amount of time that a patient gets to speak before they're interrupted by the doctor is just twelve seconds! These are just some of the alarming statistics released in Chris’s book, which address the current state of conventional medicine in America today. So what can we do about it? In this episode, we discuss the role of functional medicine and how the move toward this approach is almost inevitable. Chris explains how we can start to implement functional medicine into our lives today and start addressing the root causes of our problems, rather than masking the symptoms. This is an insightful episode for those in a medical field, health activists, and anybody looking for a solution to their personal, long-term health.

Today on the show, we welcome Bill Schutt. I hope that you already ate, because today, we are talking about a topic pretty unlike anything we have talked about before on the podcast: Cannibalism. Bill is a zoologist and bestselling author who recently wrote a book titled Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History where he talks about cannibalism across all species, including humans. This isn’t a sensationalist book, but rather a sociological, cultural and anthropological look at the reasons why cannibalism occurs in nature. Bill covers topics such as cannibalism among ancestral humans and Neanderthals, as well as the diseases related to forced cannibalism. When it comes to cannibalism, Bill uses the term “Culture is King” and how that can explain why some cultures consider eating their dead to be a more practical, reasonabl,e and respectful practice than, say, burying them. Cannibalism is something that has fascinated humans for centuries, and Bill is all about de-mystifying it, reiterating that it is all about the lens through which you look at certain behaviors. So put down your fork and have a listen to this fascinating talk that will give you loads of great conversation pieces for your next dinner party. Bon a petit!

On today’s episode, we welcome Darryl Edwards, who may arguably be one of the most fun paleo authorities around. Darryl is a speaker, a coach, nutritionist, an author, and the founder of Fitness Explorer Training. You might recognize his Primal Play methodology or perhaps you’ve just seen him piggybacking his friends around at different events. He’s been published in magazines like ELLE, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Health, and he even has a feature in an international documentary called We Love Paleo. Darryl was also recently interviewed for a new book called Born Primal and his goal with Primal Play is to make movement and activity fun and effective. Making individuals healthier and fitter in a way that’s enjoyable, rather than tedious. Although it certainly can be, play doesn’t have to mean silly or superfluous. As you’ll learn in this episode, play can also be an intense workout and help you become faster, fitter and stronger. Darryl’s method is not about rules and incremental improvements, but about moving your body creatively and using your environment to do so. Today, Darryl gives us some tips on how we can start running like a bear, chasing cars, climbing trees and putting play into practice. He also talks about the state of paleo both in London and the U.S and the future of the movement. Take a listen!

Today on the show we welcome Caitlin Allday, the Founder of Paleo University as well as the Director of Content and the organization’s nutrition coach. She is a personal nutrition coaching consultant, she studied nutrition at NYU, completed her dietetic internship at Texas ANM, and she’s also registered dietician and nutritionist. On top of that, she’s also kind of like the Indiana Jones of Paleo! Caitlin has been playing around with the paleo model of evolutionary nutrition in her own life for about a decade, and after working with many clients, she soon realized that the main issue for many people is not the idea of what to eat, it’s knowing how to cook healthy, real food in a way that’s simple, convenient, efficient, and sustainable. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re trying to break long standing habits and form new ones. So Caitlin decided to create this resource, Paleo University, where all the recipes, tutorials, meal plans, grocery lists, and kitchen skill info, is in one place. Making it easier for you to join and contribute to a more accessible community surrounding healthy habits. Today, we talk with Caitlin about her fascinating nutrition journey and what Paleo University offers, and maybe get some tips on how to be healthier, up your kitchen skills, and be more proactive in the kitchen. Take a listen!

Today we welcome Brian Mackenzie, co-author, together with Dr. Andy Galpin, of a book called Unplugged: Evolve from Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, & Consciousness. Brian is a world-renowned strength and conditioning expert and has worked with many high level winning CrossFit games athletes and Olympians. Brian’s book, Unplugged, provides a framework for using technology to meet your specific health and performance goals in a more mindful way, while also reconnecting with your own instincts and the world around you. In this episode, we learn more about Brian’s research into breathing and discuss technology addiction, diving with sharks, why technology is never going to replace your soul, and how to balance it back into our lives. On today’s show we welcome Serenity Heegel and her partner Joe Carr, founders of Serenity Kids, a company that makes portable baby food that’s gluten free, Paleo, and non-GMO in flavors like organic beef with Kale and sweet potato, chicken with peas and carrots, and even uncured bacon with kale and butternut squash. They partnered with small, American family farmers to create a delicious baby food that contains meat from animals raised humanely, on pasture, without hormones, antibiotics, or GMO feed. Pastured meats benefit the animal, the family farmers, and the planet.

The best part is that they're better for your baby because they have a much higher Omega-3s and CLAs than grain-fed meats. At Serenity Kids they blend these meats with high-quality organic vegetables to create balanced, nourishing meals. In this episode Joe and Serenity talk about how they found Paleo, why their product is unique in the baby food market, and they give some tips on the ideal baby food that I certainly didn’t know.

In today’s episode we welcome scientist and author Dr. Anthony G. Jay. Anthony is the President and CEO of AJ Consulting Company and recently wrote an eye opening book titled Estrogeneration: How Estrogenics are Making You Fat, Sick and Infertile. His book explains what estrogenics are, just how pervasive they are in our world today, and, despite the mounting evidence of their many negative effects, just how little is being done to minimize the use of unnecessary and often toxic ingredients in our food, skin care, plastics, and other daily products.

Often scientific research can be inaccessible to the average human brain, but Anthony writes in such a personable and digestable way. Anthony exposes what is in our coffee, sunscreen, our salmon and critiques the shady politics of scientific research. Although the information in his book might absolutely horrify you, thankfully he offers plenty of actionable steps for us to easily minimize the amount of estrogenics in our daily life. If you are experiencing any type of health issue, suffering from depression, or even infertility — we would highly recommend you take a listen to this illuminating interview!

PMR Episode 171 Feature Image

On today’s episode, we’re talking all about gut health. This is an incredibly multi-faceted topic as there are many layers when dealing with gut health, gut treatment, and preventative measures. From food, to exercise, to lifestyle factors, to different auto immune issues — gut health appears to be an endless topic of discovery, with rarely a clear cut diagnosis or treatment. So today, I’m talking with Dr. Michael Ruscio. Michael is a clinical researcher and author who practices functional medicine with the focus on digestive conditions. Dr. Ruscio has his own podcast and blog where he talks about gut issues, and he’s a frequent speaker on this complex topic. Here, I ask him all the questions that us, non-doctors, have about gut health. Like how to determine what your issues actually are, what they stem from, how to fix them, and even the order in which to take these steps. If you’re struggling with any gut health or digestive issues, or you know someone who is, this is an episode that you probably won’t want to miss!

PMR Episode 171 Feature Image

On today’s episode we have Dave Asprey, an entrepreneur, businessman, author and probably one of the most prominent bio hackers in the world. Not only is Dave the creator of Bullet Proof Coffee and the Bulletproof Diet, he’s also the man who’s gunning to live to 180 by hacking every element of his health. While some of Dave’s tactics are oh so Paleo – like eating quality whole foods and sleeping in a cool, dark room - some of his methods are about as opposite from traditional Paleo as you can imagine. Like taking over a 150 pills, vitamins and supplements a day! Whether you’re into bio-hacking or not, one thing we can say is that Dave Asprey is certainly putting in the time, money and effort into testing these methods for us.

In this episode we discuss everything from diets and sleep, to America’s moldy coffee and bio hacking in the womb, to what happens when Dave’s kids go through the McDonalds Drive through.

Just like knowing someone’s history can help you understand them better, understanding your DNA can help you better understand your own body’s needs. On today’s show we talk with former Olympic athlete, Craig Pickering. Craig is a former Olympic sprinter and competed in four world championships and the 2008 Olympic Games before switching to bobsleigh and qualifying for the 2014 winter Olympics, making Craig only the eighth British person to be selected for both a summer and winter Olympic Games. There’s no doubt he’s got one heck of a good story and a ton of great insights on human performance to share.

Today Craig heads up another one of his passions called DNAFit. DNAFit uses genetic information to let us know what types of training, food and supplementation will help us maximize our health and athletic performance. We had a chance to take this test and learn all kinds of interesting things and in today’s interview, we get to use our results as an example for how to use this service.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:
