Today we are so happy to welcome posture specialist and Rolfer Sukie Baxter onto the show. Sukie discovered Rolfing while she was in college and talks about how it changed her life forever by helping her flexibility, posture, injuries, and the comfort level in her body. It even lifted her mood and anxiety levels. Sukie’s main message today is that when it comes to dealing with pain, posture, and proper body alignment, it's not about having a rigidly straight body every minute of the day. Rather, we should become more aware of bio-individuality, the fact that we’re dealing with different things, exist in different environments and move differently. Therefore, having an awareness of good alignment, or the integrity of the relationships between body parts through different movements, becomes key.

Good posture is relative to the action one is participating in. We get into so much more in this episode though, touching on poor medical practices, the role of work environments in perpetuating body pain, the relationship between body movement and culture, and the tendency to see mind and body as separate. We also hear a lot more about how Sukie approaches treatment, looking at the specific movement techniques she uses, the evolution of thinking in the Rolfing community, and the potential physical causes of psychological problems.

In today’s episode, I get to speak with Pete Maldonado, who is the founder of Chomps. If you have to eat healthily but you also like your meat sticks (because who doesn’t), you have definitely heard of Chomps. Pete’s awesome company has blown up because they’re doing a great job making high-quality meat-based sticks that are also really transparent.

Chomps sticks are all grass-fed and finished, Certified Humane, paleo-friendly and even in some cases, AIP friendly. Today we talk about the business side of providing healthy products to the world, gendered food association and women as the main Chomps clientele base, and the most recent push against meat-based products. We hope you enjoy this conversation because Pete is a great guy and his company is fantastic.

Our feet are incredibly sensitive, and they play a central role in fully experiencing the world outside, which makes wearing bulky and inhibiting shoes seem strange indeed. Today’s guest, Steven Sashen, is the co-founder of Xero Shoes, and he is here to talk more about how his designs can lead us closer toward experiencing the wonder of going barefoot more often. After dealing with ongoing sprinting injuries for many years, Steven’s friend recommended running barefoot. Following his first barefoot run, Steven began to understand how to change his form and he stopped getting injured. He realized that his shoes were the cause of all his previous struggles.

Years later and Steven is now at the forefront of what he calls ‘the movement movement’, and today he speaks charismatically to the central role that overly padded footwear plays in deadening our experience of the world and causing injury. Steven is a one-of-a-kind guy who is ready to destroy any argument for mainstream shoes with an entire history of barefoot human evolution as his proof. He sets an example for the possibilities not just of going barefoot, but of reaping the rewards of pushing our bodies beyond their limits.

Ashleigh keeps it short and sweet today by reading a brilliant article on aging and mitigating its effects by Dr. Jason Kremer. Longevity: You are in Control appears in Paleo Magazine, which gives us an idea of the high-quality content to be found between the covers of the publication. A key point made early on in Kremer’s article is that genetics only accounts for 10-25% of our overall health, implying that we are mostly the masters of our destiny when it comes to combating aging. The crux of Kramer’s article is that the aging process is linked to mitochondria and telomere health, so looking after them is our anti-aging imperative.

Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of our cells, producing our primary source of energy: adenosine triphosphate or ATP. Telomeres are segments of repeating DNA found at the ends of chromosomes. These two structures can be looked after by implementing a series of lifestyle practices, including taking supplements, eating healthily, fasting, reducing toxin intake, exercising regularly and making bodily contact with the earth's surface and sun.

“We are in control of our own destiny with choices like eating a healthy diet, engaging in stress management, participating in daily movement or exercise, and managing toxic exposures having a much larger impact on our overall health and longevity.” — @ Dr Jason Kremer [0:09:54]

Today we are thrilled to invite Lillian Zhao on to the show who speaks about her women-run health foods platform, Further Food. Lillian begins by sharing the story behind her company’s genesis, which began with the sickness of some close friends. In wanting to help her friends, Lillian realized that there is very little information out there about how to prevent and cure an illness that isn’t based on Western medical principles. What began as a community content platform based on Lillian’s ‘food is medicine’ background, turned into the wonder that Further Food is today.

What makes Lillian's service different is that it has its heart in a true desire to help people heal, and is inspired by ancient recipes as well as Chinese medicine. In speaking with Lilian, we hear all about her unique product line. Her products include the best tasting (taste-free) collagen, a hugely successful chocolate collagen, and other amazing items such as her turmeric golden milk.

Today we are offering our listeners 10% off their first order on furtherfood.com if they use the code “paleomag”. This episode is also sponsored by Xero Shoes, a company that advocates for the necessity of barefoot living, and incorporates this principle into their revolutionary designs. Head over to xeroshoes.com to see what they have on offer, today!

Key Points From This Episode:

  • How the sickness of her friends lead Lillian to start a health food information platform.
  • How this information platform became a product platform through the needs of its community.
  • Further Food is fully women-run, and most of their researchers are women too.
  • The Further Food chocolate collagen recipe: 4 ingredients and sugar-free.
  • The service Further Food provides to women, who are disproportionately affected by IBS.
  • IBS is underfunded because most health experts are men.
  • The non-profits which Further Food supports, including Paleo Boss Lady.
  • Lillian’s family roots in Chinese medicine, which caused her ‘food is medicine’ approach.
  • Further Foods products are verified through stories as a counterpoint to Western science.
  • The sources of Further Food collagen: pasture-raised in Argentina, Uraguay, and Paraguay.
  • Lilian’s perspective on the negligible differences between marine and animal-based collagen.
  • A point of contention around whether plant-based collagen exists.
  • The challenges Further Food faces: less about ethics than visibility.
  • The brilliant recipe section on the Further Food website.
  • The wonder of Matcha and Ashwagandha as energy boosters which also relax.

On today’s episode, we are joined by Amy Ma, also known as the Paleo Angel, to talk about her company and what it’s like being an entrepreneur. Amy is the creator of the Paleo Power Ball, a delicious treat, which not only satisfies your sweet tooth but is also a source of nourishing, powerful ingredients. Along with being paleo, Power Balls are also AIP friendly, since Amy suffers from several autoimmune disorders herself. Like many entrepreneurs in the health food space, Amy found herself burnt out with deteriorating health before finding paleo, which turned out to be life-changing for many reasons. She healed many of her conditions and also managed to leave her law career to pursue her business full-time. Through creating Paleo Balls, she has not only been able to provide sweet treats for an underserved market, but she has also had the opportunity to express herself creatively. Still a small, handcrafted brand, Paleo Balls looks set for a very bright future in the sweet treat space.

On today's show, we are joined by the wonderful, knowledgable and charming Dr. Ron Ehrlich from the Sydney Holistic Dental Center. Dr. Ron is here to share some of his experience and wisdom around better oral care and how it fits into a more holistic and ancestral approach to health. Our guest has recently published a book titled A Life Less Stressed: The Five Pillars of Health and Wellness, as a means to share the lessons he has learned in the many decades of work in holistic dentistry.

In our conversation, we cover some of this experience and background before diving into dentistry as a profession and what a holistic approach to this area of medicine looks like. Dr. Ron talks about general health and the importance of the five pillars; sleep, breath, nourishment, movement and thought. We get into our typical ancestral discussion and look at the mouth, its evolution and centrality to our general wellbeing. Our guest brings up the ties between the microbiome in the mouth and the more commonly referred to one in the gut and stresses their interdependency. We finish off chatting about environmental factors and how they impact us continually before Dr. Ron shares a few thoughts on the simple sensibility of dental and general health.

On today’s episode, I get to have an in-depth conversation with the renowned integrative dietitian and high-performance coach, Esther Blum. Esther has helped thousands of women lose fat, eliminate the need for medication, reverse chronic illness and improve their relationship with food and their bodies, empowering them to enjoy sustained health and happiness. She also wrote a book called Cavewomen Don’t Get Fat, which listeners will get to hear more about as we talk through her holistic approach to wellness and her belief in “adding in” rather than a “taking away” when it comes adjusting your lifestyle. Inflammation and detoxing are concepts that are widely talked about but often misunderstood, and Esther sheds some light on these topics, explaining the process of ridding the body of toxins and making sure that your liver is healthy and doing its part.

She shares about the approach she takes with her clients, from systematically guiding them to alter their food and lifestyle choices to help them to discover what it is that they need to do to reach that next level of their health journey. We also chat about socially acceptable behaviors such as daytime drinking and boozy brunches and how to navigate this sensitive topic as a coach. Don’t miss out on this incredible conversation where you will also learn more about stress relief and a miracle supplement called phosphatidylserine!

On the show today we are very glad to welcome Simon Cheng the founder of Pique Tea! Simon gives us great insight into the oldest of beverages, its history, health benefits, and pervasive culture and traditions. We start off the episode with Simon's own story and how he came to find the amazing health benefits of tea through his own struggles and reoccurring issues. He tells us of the terrible ordeal he endured after a badly proposed and executed lung operation and how this led to serious changes in practice around his wellbeing. From there we chat about the essential parts of making delicious and healthy tea, from brew times to ingredients and more. Simon then expands on how Pique Tea is simplifying the tea making process and how this could change the American tea market and open it up to a whole new demographic.

We discuss some of the components and compounds that make tea so healthy and Simon makes a very strong argument for the use of tea for calm and clear thinking, gut health and consistent energy throughout the day, things that most of us would love! Pique Tea is offering our listeners a 15% discount off orders of $60 or more when you visit piquetea.life/paleomag, so do not sleep on that great special!

On today’s podcast, we have an amazing guest with us, one whom I can hardly believe hasn’t been on before! She is Sarah Fragoso: author, coach and the brilliant mind behind the Everyday Paleo book series. Sarah has been an influential person in the paleo and health and wellness scene for a long time and she’s just co-authored a new book, Hangry, that outlines five practices to balance your hormones and improve the overall quality of your life, including aspects such as self-care, mindfulness, and self-talk.

On this episode she shares her experiences growing up with a mom who struggled with health issues, the problems she herself experienced later in life and what she did when her strict exercise and diet routine stopped working and nearly pushed her to a breaking point. She discusses the process of learning that health is fluid and that, as our bodies and circumstances change, our dietary and exercise needs also change and why it is so vital to maintaining a position of openness and acceptance on this journey. Be sure to join in for this special episode!

Today on Paleo Magazine Radio we are very happy to welcome Dr. Paul Saladino! Dr. Saladino is a confirmed and staunch carnivore subscriber and advocate, believing after much experimentation and self-discovery that a meat-based diet is the most healthy way for humans to eat. Paul has his own show called the Functional Health Podcast and is currently writing a book called The Carnivore Code about his ideas on nutrition. We start off our discussion with his earlier years, traveling, searching and finding ways to live that were more healthy and fulfilling. We discuss this year's KetoCon, where we recorded this episode and some of the things that Dr. Saladino found a bit troubling about it before we get into the carnivore diet and its relationship to the keto and Paleo diets. Paul unpacks his experiences hunting and how transformative it was for him to kill a deer before talking about functional medicine and the problems with treating symptoms instead of causes. We also get into the nutrition of meat diets, the nose to tail way of eating and more!

In this episode we welcome Doug Smith, one of the co-founders of Paleo Pro. Doug is here to share his story and tell us all about his journey in health, entrepreneurship and how an accident in Kurdistan kickstarted the founding of this company and his most recent drive for physical and dietary consciousness. We hear about his earlier company, True Nutrition, how this paved the way for the supplement-based Paleo Pro and some of the founding principles of the company. Doug gives us a great look into his philosophy on supplements, health and diet in general, preferring a good healthy diet over massive amounts of supplements and making the argument for how supplements can help immensely in certain circumstances. We also discuss the usage of the term Paleo and how certain communities and terms can alienate customers through heavy usage of technical or specific jargon. Doug believes in a personalized and conscious approach to diet, something that he thinks is overlooked all too often. We get into the nitty gritty of Paleo Pro, some of the staple and bestselling products and also some new things to get excited about.

So you’ve heard about light therapy and now you’re wondering whether it’s just a passing fad in the world of health. Today on the podcast we speak to Scott Nelson, founder of Joovv, a company that offers red light and infrared LED light therapy through their diverse range of devices. From full body applications to portable, easy to use handheld devices, Scott shares how light therapy works at cellular level to produce an array of health benefits including improved sleep, muscle recovery, pain relief and skin regeneration, to name just a few. But before you think it’s all bogus – there is conclusive scientific research to back up these claims, and studies have shown how light therapy is successful even in the treatment of depression and jet lag. If you’ve considered going for light therapy or getting one of these devices, you'll definitely want to listen to this episode to help you make a well-informed decision.

“Most people, when they hear about red light therapy, just like I did when I first learned about it, they’re very cynical. There’s no way that bright red lights can lead to all of these different health benefits.” — @joovvsocial [0:05:31.1]

“A lot of the elite athletes that use our devices, that is one of the areas that they notice a difference in right away is sleep.” — @joovvsocial [0:34:01.1]

“LED that is used to illuminate a room is vastly different from a medical grade LED that is used for the purpose of light therapy.” — @joovvsocial [0:39:11.1]
