On this week’s episode, we welcome Jeff Warren, meditation teacher and co-author of Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. Being human takes practice, as someone wise once said. We all know that life isn’t easy, and sometimes just existing doesn’t come as naturally to us as we would like it to. But the truth is we could all use a little help when it comes to practicing being human, and meditation is a tool that is becoming more and more useful for people from all walks of life. But let’s say you’re like Jeff was before he got into meditation and think it’s all a bit hippy-woo-woo, or you just simply struggle to do it. Well, Jeff is here to show us that meditation doesn’t have to be someone sitting and staring at a candle for two hours. In this episode, Jeff offers honest and accessible advice about mindfulness and meditation and shows us how to incorporate these deliberate practices into our daily lives.

Today on the show, I am speaking with newly minted doctor Ryan Lowery—the president and co-founder at the Applied Science and Performance Institute and the coauthor of The Ketogenic Bible. Let’s be honest, what’s up with people eating bacon smothered in grilled cheese and calling it Keto? Is that what Keto is for most people today, and if so, why do we need this diet? You’ve been hearing it and seeing it and probably even smelling it everywhere, right? Keto-keto-keto! In this episode, don't skim the surface of something that’s trending, but rather dig deep into the science of this lifestyle and diet to see whether it’s all it’s cracked up to be. We sink our teeth into controversial Keto questions and topics, including Keto from an ancestral perspective, fat adaption, Carnivore Keto, intermittent fasting and Exogenous Ketones, and so much more.

We also attempt to tackle the big protein versus carbs conundrum and discover why Keto is anything but a short-term fix for your health. Despite “Bible” being a pretty dogmatic word in the book’s title, Ryan is anything but dogmatic. Ryan acknowledges that different diets work for different people, especially when it comes to being fat adapted, and that even Keto looks different for different people. So, is Keto all bacon smothered in grilled cheese like we see on Instagram? Or is there more to it that that? By the end of this episode, you will have been introduced to a whole new world of Keto, and you'll see that it is so much more than that. If you’ve been on the Keto fence for a while, this episode is packed with knowledge that will expand your horizons.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Find out how The Ketogenic Bible started out as a passion project in 2002.
  • Should Keto be a life-long lifestyle and nutrition program or only temporary?
  • Find out more about following Keto from an ancestral perspective.
  • The importance of being metabolically flexible and fat adapted.
  • Ryan shares the best ways to become more insulin sensitive.
  • The big Keto question: Is protein more controversial than carbs?
  • What happens when fats don’t keep you full (like everyone says they should)?
  • Ryan shares his thoughts on Carnivore Keto and who it might work for.
  • It’s not all bacon and melted cheese: Why there are many other ways to do Keto.
  • A general day for Ryan in terms of eating and working out.
  • Eating for performance versus eating for performance and longevity.
  • Find out why Ryan wants to see Ketogenic therapies being used in contact sports.
  • Discover why Ryan believes that carbs should be viewed as a tool rather than the devil.
  • Who does chloric restriction and intermittent fasting work for? Ryan’s views.
  • Fasting during the day versus at night and why Ryan recommends the latter.
  • Exogenous Ketones: Why they were invented and the purpose they serve.
  • Ryan’s advice for starting Keto—and for those about to give up!
  • And much more!

She takes us through the symptoms of unhealthy thyroid activity and explains the differences in how this can manifest. Our guest gives us some insight into Hashimoto’s disease and then offers some basic strategies for preparing and repairing these issues. This interview serves as a great introduction to her book, which we at Paleo Magazine Radio highly recommend!

Roy is a co-founder of the supplement company and he is here to give us the lowdown on their products and the way that they interact with neurotransmitters in our brains. On top of that, Roy also provides us with specific and detailed information about the Natural Stacks products for the more advanced supplement devotee. In our conversation we look back at the start of the company, the different neurotransmitters we possess, diet and exercise, and the most popular products from the Natural Stacks catalog. Roy does a great job of fielding any possible concerns and questions relating to the effects or drawbacks of supplements. We know we often focus on the physical aspects here at Paleo Magazine, but we also care about the mental and emotional aspects of health, and Josh talks about all of these, with the added dimension of the spirit. From there we look into the changes Josh made to become a coach and podcast host and what precipitated this switch. Josh is not afraid to open up and share his personal difficulties, which is what makes this conversation so powerful. Then we get down to the real juice of the show as Josh recounts his recent experiences on an ayahuasca retreat and how this literally changed his life. Now, Josh is not trying to tell you to do the same thing he has done, but he has seen the benefits and generously wants to share his story. Today on the show we welcome Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley, who collaborated on a book called The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Jess is a Master Nutrition Therapist, consultant, teacher, writer, and nutrition education program developer. As an Oncology Nutrition Specialist for over a decade, Jess has extensive experience working with cancer clients from around the globe. Dr. Nasha has been working in the healthcare industry for 25 years. She’s a nationally board-certified naturopathic doctor, licensed acupuncturist, a practitioner of oriental medicine, and she’s a fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology. She has an incredible story: she was motivated in this area by a terminal cancer diagnosis 25 years ago, where she was given months to live.

Today she lectures all over the world, and among many other things she discusses the benefits of whole foods and nutrient-dense therapeutic ketogenic diets for cancer patients. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we cover in this interview. We also discuss the keto-at-all-costs diet, deep nutrition, fasting, sweating, the connection between sugar and cancer, adapting our diet to seasonal changes, and how we can address the unseen toxins prevalent in modern life today. The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is not just a diet book. It’s a guide to the bio-chemical science of nutrition therapy, and a big part of this book, and of our discussion here today, is patient empowerment. By the end of this episode, you will feel inspired to start learning more about your body, to get back into your body, to stand up for your body, and to no longer keep viewing it as your enemy. If you are a cancer survivor, someone who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, or are wanting to improve your health and work to prevent cancer—then this is definitely an episode you don’t want to miss.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Today on the show we have nutritionist Dr. Lily Nichols to talk to us all about nutrition during pregnancy. Dr. Nichols’ latest book is titled Real Food for Pregnancies, and she is a firm believer in the whole-foods, low-carb diet associated with the Paleo community. She is, however, often hesitant to describe her nutritional approach as Paleo per se, as it possesses some connotations and tends to alienate certain sectors, but there is definitely an amount of overlap between her suggested diets and a classic Paleo approach. During our chat we go over her book and look at all the important areas of maternal health, including some beyond the realms of diet. We discuss food aversions, carb cravings, and fermented foods, as well as looking at contested topics such as raw fish, exercise, and supplements. For the most part, Dr. Nichols really stresses the importance of mindfulness through pregnancy and taking care of your body in a very important, special, and potentially stressful time. So if you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy, or could ever be thinking about pregnancy, then this episode is for you and the ones who love you! Tune in to get it all!

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Dr. Nichols’ background in nutrition and her path to her current philosophy.
  • Dr. Nichols’ approach and why she is wary of using the term ‘Paleo’.
  • Myths around eating for two while pregnant and the proper way to approach this.

  • Methods for ensuring good quality, clean, and hygienic sushi intake.
  • Supplementing vitamins and omega oils and doing this sensibly.
  • An overview of the overall optimum diet for pregnancy.

On today’s episode we have Dr. Shawn Baker, the founder of Carnivore Training Systems. We’ll be talking to Dr. Baker about all things meat and why he believes in a diet comprised of 100-percent red meat. Now, our listeners are probably already open to or enjoying a high fat, high meat diet, but Dr. Baker definitely takes this to the next level, as you will hear. Shawn Baker started out as a medical student before dropping out to play rugby in New Zealand. He worked in the Air Force and then went back to medical school. Through this time and beyond, he was always taking part in highly competitive sports and pushing his body to its limits, and through many experiments and observations he has arrived at what he calls the carnivore diet. You might be asking yourself: What about fiber? What about greens? What about berries? But all will be revealed and we at PMR think it is worth sticking around and hearing what he has to say. Tune in to hear it all!

  • Some of the scarce literature that is available to support a carnivorous diet.

“I don’t think there’s a big problem with it quite honestly. You know, I think it’s more social acceptance, more than anything. I think nutritionally, it’s fine.” — Dr. Shawn Baker [0:27:15.1]

On this week’s show we welcome Natalie, otherwise known as That Afro Paleo Girl on Instagram. Natalie is a recent friend that I made on Instagram. She has a great account, a fascinating story with the Paleo diet and lifestyle, and she, you could say, challenges the “norm” when it comes to the Paleo community. Natalie and I caught up in busy Toronto on a recent trip where we got together to talk about some things that we have never talked about before on the podcast. In this episode, Natalie shares her struggle with a very rare autoimmune disease called lichen planopilaris, which is a rare form of alopecia, and how Paleo eating has helped her. We learn more about how she was able to find information, support, and a community through social media through this autoimmune disease and why she chose to combat this disease using Paleo. We also talk about the lack of diversity, at least visibly online, in the Paleo community and how we can maybe work to fix that to create a more inclusive culture. Natalie has an extremely positive outlook on life, and if you’re looking for any form of inspiration, this is an episode for you.

Today’s show is a little different from our usual format. I would like to take this opportunity to share an article that I recently had published in the February issue of Paleo Magazine. I thought this would be a good way to catch up some listeners on the article if they had missed it or not yet had a chance to read it, and I hope you enjoy the way this episode switches things up! The article looks back at the last year of hosting this podcast and some of the highlights and memorable quotes from my guests. I have selected some personally impactful quotes in a few different areas that we have covered with the aim to remind us of some of the inspiring conversations we have had. You may even want to go back, re-listen, and get inspired all over again!
