On today’s episode, we welcome Darryl Edwards, who may arguably be one of the most fun paleo authorities around. Darryl is a speaker, a coach, nutritionist, an author, and the founder of Fitness Explorer Training. You might recognize his Primal Play methodology or perhaps you’ve just seen him piggybacking his friends around at different events. He’s been published in magazines like ELLE, Men’s Fitness, Women’s Health, and he even has a feature in an international documentary called We Love Paleo. Darryl was also recently interviewed for a new book called Born Primal and his goal with Primal Play is to make movement and activity fun and effective. Making individuals healthier and fitter in a way that’s enjoyable, rather than tedious. Although it certainly can be, play doesn’t have to mean silly or superfluous. As you’ll learn in this episode, play can also be an intense workout and help you become faster, fitter and stronger. Darryl’s method is not about rules and incremental improvements, but about moving your body creatively and using your environment to do so. Today, Darryl gives us some tips on how we can start running like a bear, chasing cars, climbing trees and putting play into practice. He also talks about the state of paleo both in London and the U.S and the future of the movement. Take a listen!

Today on the show we welcome Caitlin Allday, the Founder of Paleo University as well as the Director of Content and the organization’s nutrition coach. She is a personal nutrition coaching consultant, she studied nutrition at NYU, completed her dietetic internship at Texas ANM, and she’s also registered dietician and nutritionist. On top of that, she’s also kind of like the Indiana Jones of Paleo! Caitlin has been playing around with the paleo model of evolutionary nutrition in her own life for about a decade, and after working with many clients, she soon realized that the main issue for many people is not the idea of what to eat, it’s knowing how to cook healthy, real food in a way that’s simple, convenient, efficient, and sustainable. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re trying to break long standing habits and form new ones. So Caitlin decided to create this resource, Paleo University, where all the recipes, tutorials, meal plans, grocery lists, and kitchen skill info, is in one place. Making it easier for you to join and contribute to a more accessible community surrounding healthy habits. Today, we talk with Caitlin about her fascinating nutrition journey and what Paleo University offers, and maybe get some tips on how to be healthier, up your kitchen skills, and be more proactive in the kitchen. Take a listen!

Today we welcome Brian Mackenzie, co-author, together with Dr. Andy Galpin, of a book called Unplugged: Evolve from Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, & Consciousness. Brian is a world-renowned strength and conditioning expert and has worked with many high level winning CrossFit games athletes and Olympians. He cofounded XPT Life, a wellness conditioning and recovery program, with Laird Hamilton and Gabby Reese. For a while now, the idea of being “plugged in” has been considered pretty much exclusively positive, but it’s safe to say that our addiction to technology today has spiraled out of control, keeping many of us from living our own lives or listening to what our body is telling us. Brian’s book, Unplugged, provides a framework for using technology to meet your specific health and performance goals in a more mindful way, while also reconnecting with your own instincts and the world around you. In this episode, we learn more about Brian’s research into breathing and discuss technology addiction, diving with sharks, why technology is never going to replace your soul, and how to balance it back into our lives. Take a listen!

On today’s show we welcome Serenity Heegel and her partner Joe Carr, founders of Serenity Kids, a company that makes portable baby food that’s gluten free, Paleo, and non-GMO in flavors like organic beef with Kale and sweet potato, chicken with peas and carrots, and even uncured bacon with kale and butternut squash. They started Serenity Kids because they wanted only the best for their future baby. They partnered with small, American family farmers to create a delicious baby food that contains meat from animals raised humanely, on pasture, without hormones, antibiotics, or GMO feed. Pastured meats benefit the animal, the family farmers, and the planet.

The best part is that they're better for your baby because they have a much higher Omega-3s and CLAs than grain-fed meats. At Serenity Kids they blend these meats with high-quality organic vegetables to create balanced, nourishing meals. In this episode Joe and Serenity talk about how they found Paleo, why their product is unique in the baby food market, and they give some tips on the ideal baby food that I certainly didn’t know.

In today’s episode we welcome scientist and author Dr. Anthony G. Jay. Anthony is the President and CEO of AJ Consulting Company and recently wrote an eye opening book titled Estrogeneration: How Estrogenics are Making You Fat, Sick and Infertile. His book explains what estrogenics are, just how pervasive they are in our world today, and, despite the mounting evidence of their many negative effects, just how little is being done to minimize the use of unnecessary and often toxic ingredients in our food, skin care, plastics, and other daily products.

Often scientific research can be inaccessible to the average human brain, but Anthony writes in such a personable and digestable way. Anthony exposes what is in our coffee, sunscreen, our salmon and critiques the shady politics of scientific research. Although the information in his book might absolutely horrify you, thankfully he offers plenty of actionable steps for us to easily minimize the amount of estrogenics in our daily life. If you are experiencing any type of health issue, suffering from depression, or even infertility — we would highly recommend you take a listen to this illuminating interview!

PMR Episode 171 Feature Image

On today’s episode, we’re talking all about gut health. This is an incredibly multi-faceted topic as there are many layers when dealing with gut health, gut treatment, and preventative measures. From food, to exercise, to lifestyle factors, to different auto immune issues — gut health appears to be an endless topic of discovery, with rarely a clear cut diagnosis or treatment. So today, I’m talking with Dr. Michael Ruscio. Michael is a clinical researcher and author who practices functional medicine with the focus on digestive conditions. Dr. Ruscio has his own podcast and blog where he talks about gut issues, and he’s a frequent speaker on this complex topic. Here, I ask him all the questions that us, non-doctors, have about gut health. Like how to determine what your issues actually are, what they stem from, how to fix them, and even the order in which to take these steps. If you’re struggling with any gut health or digestive issues, or you know someone who is, this is an episode that you probably won’t want to miss!

PMR Episode 171 Feature Image

On today’s episode we have Dave Asprey, an entrepreneur, businessman, author and probably one of the most prominent bio hackers in the world. Not only is Dave the creator of Bullet Proof Coffee and the Bulletproof Diet, he’s also the man who’s gunning to live to 180 by hacking every element of his health. While some of Dave’s tactics are oh so Paleo – like eating quality whole foods and sleeping in a cool, dark room - some of his methods are about as opposite from traditional Paleo as you can imagine. Like taking over a 150 pills, vitamins and supplements a day! Whether you’re into bio-hacking or not, one thing we can say is that Dave Asprey is certainly putting in the time, money and effort into testing these methods for us.

In this episode we discuss everything from diets and sleep, to America’s moldy coffee and bio hacking in the womb, to what happens when Dave’s kids go through the McDonalds Drive through.

Just like knowing someone’s history can help you understand them better, understanding your DNA can help you better understand your own body’s needs. On today’s show we talk with former Olympic athlete, Craig Pickering. Craig is a former Olympic sprinter and competed in four world championships and the 2008 Olympic Games before switching to bobsleigh and qualifying for the 2014 winter Olympics, making Craig only the eighth British person to be selected for both a summer and winter Olympic Games. There’s no doubt he’s got one heck of a good story and a ton of great insights on human performance to share.

Today Craig heads up another one of his passions called DNAFit. DNAFit uses genetic information to let us know what types of training, food and supplementation will help us maximize our health and athletic performance. We had a chance to take this test and learn all kinds of interesting things and in today’s interview, we get to use our results as an example for how to use this service.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • How Craig became a professional athlete.
  • Why Craig moved from the 100m Olympic sprint to British Bobsleigh.
  • What a bobsleigh is really like, and Craig’s experience.
  • Craig’s injury setback and how he got involved in DNAFit.
  • What DNAFit is and how DNAFit testing works?
  • How DNAFit helped Craig himself.

“Being in an actual bobsleigh was horrific.” — @craig100m [0:07:15.1]

“If we know what DNA we’ve got, we can change the training and diet we do to best suit our genetic makeup.” — @craig100m [0:10:53.1]

“The biggest issues around DNA testing is that people aren’t aware that you can do it and how valid it is.” — @craig100m [0:15:11.3]

“There is no good news or bad news, just actionable news.” — @craig100m [0:27:02.3]

“Having a better idea, at the start, of what works for you could be massively important.” — @craig100m [0:37:01.4]

Crowd Cow is a pretty cool new company that is changing the way we purchase our meat by providing high quality beef in a convenient new format. They use an online system where you can put money on a cow, basically becoming a “steak-holder”, get it? You can purchase as much as you want without having to split a cow with someone else and then find a place to store it all. The grass fed beef comes from small, sustainable, and independent ranches and we can tell you personally that the quality is awesome. It’s delivered frozen straight to your door, in individual sous vide-ready vacuum packs.

The whole process makes getting the best quality beef, the exact cuts you want and the quantities, easier than ever. So we figured this company is something that Paleo listeners or anyone who appreciates a good steak would be interested in. Today we’re talking to Joe Heitzeberg, the CEO of the company, about how he came to the idea and we learn a bit more about the process, about the beef, and about some of the interesting challenges involved in running a company like this.

On today's show we discuss:

  • Crowd Cow and how the company works.
  • The niche market that Crowd Cow serves.
  • The types of beef cuts they provide and where they are sourced from.
  • The different seasonalities of beef cuts that are available.
  • The challenges that they encountered as they brought Crowd Cow to the public.
  • The importance of getting in front of the right customer base.
  • The relationship that Crowd Cow builds with its ranchers.
  • How the team at Crowd Cow built an online community to offer information and resources.

“Any cow standing in a field could be called grass fed.” — @jheitzeb @crowdcowusa [0:14:19.1]

You’ve heard of the term “going off the grid”, but how many of us have actually contemplated doing it? An even fewer number made the necessary steps, truly living off the grid, even temporarily. Gary Collins is one of those rare folks, and he joins us on the podcast today. He has worked in Military Intelligence, the US State Department, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the US Food and Drug Administration as a special agent. Gary has written books on his own unique take on being healthy, including his latest book, Going Off the Grid. This is a fun podcast and one we know you're going to learn a lot from.

If you are a little bit of a health nut and a little bit of a meat head like we are, then you have probably already heard about pureWOD, a supplement company offering protein powders, pre-workouts, post workouts, and greens that are made with only a few high quality ingredients. pureWOD has recently undergone a rebranding and is now called Equip, which we will get into a bit in our talk today with Dr. Anthony Gustin, who developed the company because he could not find what he was looking for in the market and wanted supplements that were the next best thing to food when food just is not convenient or available.

The company has taken off and he has since started a new one called Perfect Keto, offering exogenous ketone powders for those high-flying, bio-hacking keto folks who need help getting into or staying in ketosis. That’s kind of just the tip of the iceberg for Anthony. He is an authority in health and wellness and does a lot of self-experimentation with fasting, keto, and other stuff for his website and blog. He is very fun to follow on social media for that reason, and he is one of those guys that talking to him makes you feel a little bit lazy, but in a good way because he inspires you to do a little more experimenting and learning on your own.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • What Dr. Anthony does, and why he started his companies.
  • Why our bodies need different sources of protein and macronutrients.
  • The specific products provided by Dr. Anthony’s companies.
  • The biggest hole in the American diet as it pertains to micronutrients.
  • Dr. Anthony’s results of experimenting with fasting.
  • The challenges with a ketogenic diet and how it is very individualized.
  • Why you need to cut your protein intake significantly when doing a keto diet.
  • How exogenous ketones work and how they differentiate from endogenous ketones.
  • His typical day of eating and his preferred workouts on a ketogenic diet.

“Just getting people on the base level of eating real food is a really good place to start.” — @dranthonygustin [0:41:39.1]

PMR Episode 163 Feature Image

This is a special quick edition of the podcast because this week, we are heading to Paleo f(x), a health, nutrition, fitness, and wellness event that focuses on the Paleo lifestyle. It’s a three day event in Austin Texas May 19th to the 21st and it features hundreds of vendors with food, supplements, fitness gear and more, thousands of attendees from all over the place, all kinds of special events, workout opportunities, workshops and educational sessions and it’s a literal who’s who of world class experts in the Paleo community.

To learn a bit more about what we can expect with this year’s show, we managed to get the very busy founders of Paleo f(x), Michelle and Keith Norris to join us today. Keith is one of those few lucky souls who escaped corporate America and and was able to transition full-time into his passion for bettering lives by teaching the art and science of physical culture. Michelle is a former corporate warrior, trained chef, and multi-potentialite. Her personal health issues and struggles with the traditional medical system inspired her to take a new approach in how the world tackles health, wellness, and prosperity.

On today's show we discuss:

It’s girl talk time, or women talk we should say, because today we are talking to Stefani Ruper, the founder of Paleo for Women and the cohost of the Paleo Women Podcast. Stefani has been a main stay in the Paleo world since she started her website talking about her struggles with PCOS and other hormonal issues. She tends to focus less on prescriptive rules and more on ways to love yourself and have a healthy mind and body.

Stefani’s open, she’ll talk about real stuff, even if it’s uncomfortable, like acne, PMS, sexual health, and all the good stuff we really want to hear about, which is why we’re so glad she is on the show today. Stefani is also the author of a book called Sexy by Nature, acknowledging what most of us women already know, that our health and physiology is a bit more complicated than men’s. As such, we need to pay some extra attention to it rather than just following some blanket weight loss plan and hoping that will fix everything.

Today we are going to get into all of that and more and although there is plenty of girl power, anyone can enjoy this podcast because Stefani is just so fun to talk to and makes it easy for everyone to learn something.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • How Stefani was motivated to pursue philosophy studies.
  • The Paleo Women Podcast, and the topics they discuss.
  • Stefani’s tips on how to combat the ever present bodies image issues in our society.
  • The main topics Stefani covers on her blog and how she helps bring women issues to the forefront.
  • Why Stefani has adopted more of a balanced Paleo diet, and her thoughts on legumes and plant estrogens.
  • The ketogenic diet, and why it can be helpful for some, but unnecessary for others.
  • How Stefani prioritizes her sleep and keeps her self-care at the top of her list.
  • What Stefani has to say about what we can all do today to improve our lives.

“I realized that paleo was not going to make me live forever, and nothing will” — @PaleoforWomen [0:27:26.1]

“The future of health is going to be 80% psychological.” — @PaleoforWomen [0:33:03.1]

It turns out that going from working at NASA to launching a very popular collagen company may not be as big a step as you think. Today’s guest is Kurt Seidensticker, the founder of Vital Proteins, one of the biggest companies offering collagen products on the market today and we might be their biggest fans. Their grass fed whey and marine collagen products can make a huge difference in the health of your skin and nails and digestion, even your joints, which is great for those of us who work out a lot.

Collagen seems like a miracle product until you really learn more about it and then it makes a lot of sense why it does all of the great things that it does. But in any case, we’re a little bit obsessed with them. We are talking to Kurt today about the company, why collagen is so great, and he teases us with a bunch of new products that he will be showing at Paleo f(x) this year.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • Kurt’s background and how Vital Proteins was started.
  • How Kurt went from being an aerospace engineer for NASA to starting a protein company.
  • The importance of collagen in our diet, and why we may not be getting enough.
  • How collagen is processed, what it is, and the major health benefits it brings.
  • The differences between the Vital Proteins products.
  • What sets Vital Proteins apart from other protein companies in the marketplace.
  • What a day in Kurt’s life looks like.
  • The new products that Vital Proteins will be showcasing at Paleo f(x).

“When you talk about collagen, you talk about a healthy lifestyle.” — Kurt Seidensticker [0:21:31.1]
