Life might give us lemons, but we don't always get to making lemonade right away. This is because, unlike lemonade, adding sugar to bitter events only provides a temporary salve with long term consequences.

This was the case for Michael Tamez, who after a devastating series of personal tragedies found that his coping mechanism of eating junk food caused him to rapidly become overweight and gave him severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and gum disease too.

On today's Paleo Radio Bite, we talk to Michael about how he turned all of this around and transformed the dysfunctional relationship he had to food, and transformed his lifestyle, health, and body in the process.

One thing we've noticed working in the health and wellness industry is that people often assume that we've always had it all together.

They assume we've always eaten Paleo, they assume we've always worked out, and they assume that we never struggled with staying fit. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. We do this work because of the challenges we faced, not because we lacked them.

That's why it was so exciting to finally talk to Melissa Joulwan. Fashionable, fit, and successful, Mel looks like she's always "had it all together" too, but as you'll soon find out, her early struggles, numerous as they were, were the very things that forged her into the person she is today.

In our conversation we discuss:

  • Overcoming klutziness
  • Having something to prove
  • The benefits of setting big, audacious, physical goals
  • The psychology of Roller Derby
  • The success secret athletes don't often share
  • Her new cookbook, Well Fed Weeknights, which will teach you how to put together fantastic meals in 45 minutes or less

Do you ever feel like you're doing all the right things but you're still not getting results?

We've seen many people working out hard, eating clean, and still having trouble shaking excess body fat. Other times they are tired and lack energy, but in either case, everything looks good, that is until you look under the hood.

As a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner Mike Ritter does just that, and in our conversation today, we discuss the things he finds, and how he fixes them.

Do you love knowing obscure facts and figures?

Do you have a tendency for Googling well past your bedtime?

Do you regularly win at trivia night?

You might have a "Thirsty Brain" and Matt McCary might have the cure.

Matt is widely known in the Paleo community as one half of the dynamic Paleo Parent's duo, but after writing multiple best-selling books, creating an uber popular blog, and producing blockbuster podcasts, he and his wife Stacy decided they wanted to get Real.

Their new website, RealEverything.com, is dedicated to real talk, real food, and real life, and for Matt, this meant exploring his boundless search for knowledge. Matt's new podcast, Thirsty Brain with Matt McCary, explores everything from the history of zombies and Julius Caesar to medieval surgical masks and the sleeping habits of ducks.

On today's episode of PMR, Matt joins us for a Paleo-centric preview of Thirsty Brain where we dive deep into the controversial question, "How long did cavemen actually live?"

In our conversation we discuss:

  • The important differences between lifespan and life expectancy
  • What all-cause mortality means
  • Why wheat made us shorter
  • How our modern lives have been extended despite our crappy diets
  • and the reasons why our hunter gatherer ancestors really did die young, but spoiler alert, it had nothing to do with diet.
