Today on the show, I am speaking with newly minted doctor Ryan Lowery—the president and co-founder at the Applied Science and Performance Institute and the coauthor of The Ketogenic Bible. Let’s be honest, what’s up with people eating bacon smothered in grilled cheese and calling it Keto? Is that what Keto is for most people today, and if so, why do we need this diet? You’ve been hearing it and seeing it and probably even smelling it everywhere, right? Keto-keto-keto! On this week’s episode we welcome Dr. Becky Campbell, the author of The 30-Day Thyroid Reset Plan. Dr. Campbell talks to us all about her book and her holistic philosophy towards health and wellness. She explains the importance of the thyroid gland and how deeply it affects our physical and mental health. Until recently, the thyroid has not been given a lot of attention from the medical community, and it still seems to be emerging as something that is accepted as a huge determinant for human health. On today’s episode we have a quick interview from Paleo f(x) with Ben Greenfield. At the time of this interview, Ben had just sustained a series of serious injuries after he was in a traffic accident while riding his bike, and although this isn’t the point of the conversation, it’s worth noting that Ben was still attending and participating in the Paleo f(x) conference despite the circumstance, so he must be doing something right. In fact, during this time he was keeping all his followers and supporters up to date with his progress and recovery schedule, turning his misfortune into something beneficial for anyone listening. Ben is a health and fitness renaissance man, doing just about everything (and a little more). We chat to him about a few of the things he does in his day-to-day life and about how he manages such a busy schedule. He also comments on diet, the conference, and his bucket list. Today on the show, we welcome Sophie Van Tiggelen. Sophie is an autoimmune warrior, foodie, recipe developer, and the creator of the popular food blog Squirrel in the Kitchen and the author of The Autoimmune Protocol Made Simple. In 2009, after a month of dealing with anxiety, severe insomnia, trips to the emergency room, and many doctors and multiple lab tests. Sophie was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease attacking the thyroid. In this episode, Sophie shares more about her journey with Hashimoto’s and how she managed to go into remission through the AIP diet. Sophie is a positive, helpful force in the Paleo and AIP communities, and she is helping many, many people  sort through the extremely complicated issues of gut health and autoimmune problems so they can be their best, healthiest selves. On the show today we are very lucky to host Frank Zummo, who is the drummer of rock band Sum 41 and the founder of Street Drum Corps. Today on the show we welcome Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley, who collaborated on a book called The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Jess is a Master Nutrition Therapist, consultant, teacher, writer, and nutrition education program developer. As an Oncology Nutrition Specialist for over a decade, Jess has extensive experience working with cancer clients from around the globe. Dr. Nasha has been working in the healthcare industry for 25 years. She’s a nationally board-certified naturopathic doctor, licensed acupuncturist, a practitioner of oriental medicine, and she’s a fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology. She has an incredible story: she was motivated in this area by a terminal cancer diagnosis 25 years ago, where she was given months to live. 

Today she lectures all over the world, and among many other things she discusses the benefits of whole foods and nutrient-dense therapeutic ketogenic diets for cancer patients. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we cover in this interview. We also discuss the keto-at-all-costs diet, deep nutrition, fasting, sweating, the connection between sugar and cancer, adapting our diet to seasonal changes, and how we can address the unseen toxins prevalent in modern life today. Today on the show we have nutritionist Dr. Lily Nichols to talk to us all about nutrition during pregnancy. Dr. Nichols’ latest book is titled Real Food for Pregnancies, and she is a firm believer in the whole-foods, low-carb diet associated with the Paleo community. She is, however, often hesitant to describe her nutritional approach as Paleo per se, as it possesses some connotations and tends to alienate certain sectors, but there is definitely an amount of overlap between her suggested diets and a classic Paleo approach. During our chat we go over her book and look at all the important areas of maternal health, including some beyond the realms of diet. We discuss food aversions, carb cravings, and fermented foods, as well as looking at contested topics such as raw fish, exercise, and supplements. For the most part, Dr. Nichols really stresses the importance of mindfulness through pregnancy and taking care of your body in a very important, special, and potentially stressful time. On today’s episode we have Dr. Shawn Baker, the founder of Carnivore Training Systems. We’ll be talking to Dr. Baker about all things meat and why he believes in a diet comprised of 100-percent red meat. Now, our listeners are probably already open to or enjoying a high fat, high meat diet, but Dr. Baker definitely takes this to the next level, as you will hear. Shawn Baker started out as a medical student before dropping out to play rugby in New Zealand. He worked in the Air Force and then went back to medical school. Through this time and beyond, he was always taking part in highly competitive sports and pushing his body to its limits, and through many experiments and observations he has arrived at what he calls the carnivore diet. On this week’s show we welcome Natalie, otherwise known as That Afro Paleo Girl on Instagram. Natalie is a recent friend that I made on Instagram. She has a great account, a fascinating story with the Paleo diet and lifestyle, and she, you could say, challenges the “norm” when it comes to the Paleo community. Natalie and I caught up in busy Toronto on a recent trip where we got together to talk about some things that we have never talked about before on the podcast. In this episode, Natalie shares her struggle with a very rare autoimmune disease called lichen planopilaris, which is a rare form of alopecia, and how Paleo eating has helped her. We learn more about how she was able to find information, support, and a community through social media through this autoimmune disease and why she chose to combat this disease using Paleo. We also talk about the lack of diversity, at least visibly online, in the Paleo community and how we can maybe work to fix that to create a more inclusive culture. On today’s show we host Brian Richards, the founder of Sauna Space, who produce a range of portable infrared light and heat therapy devices. These come in the form of desk lamps and portable tents for use at home. Brian came upon this business after seeking solutions to his own health problems, and found that near infrared light helped solve his insomnia almost immediately. If you are not familiar with ghee, it's clarified butter, so it is derived from butter but without the milk solids.
