On today’s episode we welcome Josh Trent of the Wellness Force Podcast. This is an extra special podcast that is sure to get you thinking and moving! Josh is here to talk to us all about wellness. We know we often focus on the physical aspects here at Paleo Magazine, but we also care about the mental and emotional aspects of health, and Josh talks about all of these, with the added dimension of the spirit. We chat to Josh about his childhood, the difficulties he experienced, and how all this led to him becoming a personal trainer. From there we look into the changes Josh made to become a coach and podcast host and what precipitated this switch. Josh is not afraid to open up and share his personal difficulties, which is what makes this conversation so powerful. Then we get down to the real juice of the show as Josh recounts his recent experiences on an ayahuasca retreat and how this literally changed his life. Now, Josh is not trying to tell you to do the same thing he has done, but he has seen the benefits and generously wants to share his story. Spirit quests and psychedelics are not for everyone, and Josh stresses that you need to be ready for the journey. There is a lot to take in in this episode, so strap in and let’s go!

Today on the show we welcome Dr. Nasha Winters and Jess Higgins Kelley, who collaborated on a book called The Metabolic Approach to Cancer. Jess is a Master Nutrition Therapist, consultant, teacher, writer, and nutrition education program developer. As an Oncology Nutrition Specialist for over a decade, Jess has extensive experience working with cancer clients from around the globe. Dr. Nasha has been working in the healthcare industry for 25 years. She’s a nationally board-certified naturopathic doctor, licensed acupuncturist, a practitioner of oriental medicine, and she’s a fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology. She has an incredible story: she was motivated in this area by a terminal cancer diagnosis 25 years ago, where she was given months to live.

Today she lectures all over the world, and among many other things she discusses the benefits of whole foods and nutrient-dense therapeutic ketogenic diets for cancer patients. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we cover in this interview. We also discuss the keto-at-all-costs diet, deep nutrition, fasting, sweating, the connection between sugar and cancer, adapting our diet to seasonal changes, and how we can address the unseen toxins prevalent in modern life today. The Metabolic Approach to Cancer is not just a diet book. It’s a guide to the bio-chemical science of nutrition therapy, and a big part of this book, and of our discussion here today, is patient empowerment. By the end of this episode, you will feel inspired to start learning more about your body, to get back into your body, to stand up for your body, and to no longer keep viewing it as your enemy. If you are a cancer survivor, someone who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, or are wanting to improve your health and work to prevent cancer—then this is definitely an episode you don’t want to miss.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • How Dr. Nasha and Jess came to write the book The Metabolic Approach to Cancer.
  • Why Jess felt a need to better merge nutrition and oncology in her practice.
  • Dr. Nasha shares her struggle with stage four terminal ovarian cancer.
  • How Dr. Nasha discovered Dr. Otto Warburg’s theories of the metabolic aspect of cancer.
  • Why Dr. Nasha began tweaking her health and becoming her own living laboratory.
  • Discover what Dr. Nasha and Kelly mean by the term “deep nutrition.”
  • Why cancer cells love sugar and how the ketogenic diet can help treat cancer.
  • How human beings have existed in a fat-adapted and a fasted state throughout history.
  • The different ways that people can fast, and fasting when undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Discover why humans need to adapt their diet to seasonal changes and climate.
  • The 10 hallmarks of cancer—the terrain 10–and how they can help you evaluate your diet.
  • CBD, THC, and terpenoids: How they work together and assist in the fight against cancer.
  • Major problematic lifestyle factors seen today and how we can start to address them.
  • Being proactive about detoxing our air and water and the benefits of sauna.
  • Holistic medicine versus modern medicine: How do we draw from both sides?
  • And much more!

Tweetables:

“Deep nutrition is activating and regenerating on a mitochondrial level as opposed to just food in your mouth to get into ketosis.” — @drnashawinters [0:10:00.1]

“We have to take nutrition far deeper than just saying, ‘Eat tomatoes.’” — Jess Higgins Kelley [0:10:45.1]

“The ketogenic diet is not a cure for cancer, but what it does do is it helps to destabilize those cells.” — Jess Higgins Kelley [0:18:40.1]

“We are finding that the ketogenic diet itself directly addresses all 10 of the hallmarks of cancer.” — Jess Higgins Kelley [0:36:00.1]

On today’s episode we host Samantha Lee Wright from The Essential Oil Revolution podcast. Samantha is here to talk to us about all things essential oils and how they can improve your life and health. We look at the difference between good quality and cheap products and why to choose quality over price. We also get into health benefits, usage instructions, dosage, and some of the history of essential oil use by humans. Most of our listeners are probably aware of essential oils as a product, if they do not already use them, but it only now that the real benefits of the substances are coming to light and they are becoming a mainstream health item. Today on the show we have nutritionist Dr. Lily Nichols to talk to us all about nutrition during pregnancy. Dr. Nichols’ latest book is titled Real Food for Pregnancies, and she is a firm believer in the whole-foods, low-carb diet associated with the Paleo community. She is, however, often hesitant to describe her nutritional approach as Paleo per se, as it possesses some connotations and tends to alienate certain sectors, but there is definitely an amount of overlap between her suggested diets and a classic Paleo approach. During our chat we go over her book and look at all the important areas of maternal health, including some beyond the realms of diet. We discuss food aversions, carb cravings, and fermented foods, as well as looking at contested topics such as raw fish, exercise, and supplements. For the most part, Dr. Nichols really stresses the importance of mindfulness through pregnancy and taking care of your body in a very important, special, and potentially stressful time. So if you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy, or could ever be thinking about pregnancy, then this episode is for you and the ones who love you! Tune in to get it all!

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Dr. Nichols’ background in nutrition and her path to her current philosophy.
  • Dr. Nichols’ approach and why she is wary of using the term ‘Paleo’.
  • Myths around eating for two while pregnant and the proper way to approach this.
  • Food aversions during pregnancy, reasons for these, and how to deal with them healthily.
  • Carb cravings and understanding the balance to strike during pregnancy.
  • Reprogramming pregnant woman away from high-carb towards higher-fat diets.
  • The positives of consuming a high amount of fermented foods during pregnancy.
  • Myths around sushi and Dr Nichols’ perspective on these.
  • Methods for ensuring good quality, clean, and hygienic sushi intake.
  • Supplementing vitamins and omega oils and doing this sensibly.
  • An overview of the overall optimum diet for pregnancy.
  • Combatting hypothyroidism and the risks to the thyroid during pregnancy.
  • How to approach exercise during term and mindfulness within this.
  • Understanding healthy exertion versus over doing it.
  • Taking care of your whole body and mental state through an exceptional and stressful period.
    And much more

Tweetables:

“The concept of eating for two is so overstated.” — Dr. Lily Nichols [0:06:55.9]

“I have to do a lot of deprogramming in my work because all the prenatal nutrition recommendation are a reflection of our outdated US dietary guidelines.” — Dr Lily Nichols [0:22:22.3

On today’s episode we have Dr. Shawn Baker, the founder of Carnivore Training Systems. We’ll be talking to Dr. Baker about all things meat and why he believes in a diet comprised of 100-percent red meat. Now, our listeners are probably already open to or enjoying a high fat, high meat diet, but Dr. Baker definitely takes this to the next level, as you will hear. Shawn Baker started out as a medical student before dropping out to play rugby in New Zealand. He worked in the Air Force and then went back to medical school. Through this time and beyond, he was always taking part in highly competitive sports and pushing his body to its limits, and through many experiments and observations he has arrived at what he calls the carnivore diet. You might be asking yourself: What about fiber? What about greens? What about berries? But all will be revealed and we at PMR think it is worth sticking around and hearing what he has to say. Tune in to hear it all!

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Dr. Baker’s background and how he dropped out of medical school to play rugby.
  • Some of the scarce literature that is available to support a carnivorous diet.
  • The lack of data that can be gathered and how Dr. Baker hopes to use what is available.
  • What a carnivorous diet actually means and why it consists of things other than meat.
  • Possible problems and health issues that might arise out of transitioning to this diet.
  • Overlaps between the keto diet and the carnivorous diet.
  • Why you might gain or lose weight on this diet depending on your body.
  • Intermittent feasting and the role of fasting within Dr. Baker’s plan.
  • Why you might want to cook and eat less if you are eating only red meat.
  • Dr. Baker’s kids’ diet and applying this plan for younger persons.
  • What Dr. Baker’s cheat day might look like and when he did go off the diet.
  • Ways to measure your body's functions during a 30 day trial of the carnivore diet.
  • Supplementation and speculation around things that you might miss out on.
  • Different genes and their ability to handle this diet from an evolutionary perspective.
  • What type of person is this diet well-suited to?
  • Success for women on this carnivorous diet plan and why it is not impossible.
  • How Dr. Baker envisions the diet being used by different people according to their needs.
  • The Carnivore Training System and what the plan includes.
  • Different training plans for different sports and how this might fit in.
  • And much more!

Tweetables:

“In truth, there is not a lot of data on this, I’m trying to change that, I’m trying to collect data. It’s semi-informal right now but we are gathering a lot.” — Dr. Shawn Baker [0:12:19.1]

“I don’t think there’s a big problem with it quite honestly. You know, I think it’s more social acceptance, more than anything. I think nutritionally, it’s fine.” — Dr. Shawn Baker [0:27:15.1]

On this week’s show we welcome Natalie, otherwise known as That Afro Paleo Girl on Instagram. Natalie is a recent friend that I made on Instagram. She has a great account, a fascinating story with the Paleo diet and lifestyle, and she, you could say, challenges the “norm” when it comes to the Paleo community. Natalie and I caught up in busy Toronto on a recent trip where we got together to talk about some things that we have never talked about before on the podcast. In this episode, Natalie shares her struggle with a very rare autoimmune disease called lichen planopilaris, which is a rare form of alopecia, and how Paleo eating has helped her. We learn more about how she was able to find information, support, and a community through social media through this autoimmune disease and why she chose to combat this disease using Paleo. We also talk about the lack of diversity, at least visibly online, in the Paleo community and how we can maybe work to fix that to create a more inclusive culture. Natalie has an extremely positive outlook on life, and if you’re looking for any form of inspiration, this is an episode for you.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

Key Points From This Episode:

  • Learn more about Natalie’s rare autoimmune disease: lichen planopilaris.
  • Why Natalie decided to choose diet and lifestyle as a way to combat her disease.
  • Find out how Natalie transitioned to an autoimmune Paleo diet.

Today’s show is a little different from our usual format. I would like to take this opportunity to share an article that I recently had published in the February issue of Paleo Magazine. I thought this would be a good way to catch up some listeners on the article if they had missed it or not yet had a chance to read it, and I hope you enjoy the way this episode switches things up! The article looks back at the last year of hosting this podcast and some of the highlights and memorable quotes from my guests. I have selected some personally impactful quotes in a few different areas that we have covered with the aim to remind us of some of the inspiring conversations we have had. You may even want to go back, re-listen, and get inspired all over again!

On today’s show we host Brian Richards, the founder of Sauna Space, who produce a range of portable infrared light and heat therapy devices. These come in the form of desk lamps and portable tents for use at home. Brian came upon this business after seeking solutions to his own health problems, and found that near infrared light helped solve his insomnia almost immediately. This experience, coupled with the gap in the market that he noticed, prompted him to found the company, and we are very happy to speak to him about his flagship products and what is surely going to be a booming business. During our chat we break down the health benefits of sauna therapy as well as compare inferior and more common instances of these practices. The foundation of heat and light therapy is mirroring the experience of our ancestors, much like a Paleo diet does with food, so this makes a lot of sense to us here at Paleo Magazine. Listen in to hear more!
