On today’s episode we host Samantha Lee Wright from The Essential Oil Revolution podcast. Samantha is here to talk to us about all things essential oils and how they can improve your life and health. During the discussion, we cover Samantha’s history and how she became involved in working with essential oils before diving into the nitty gritty on the subject. We look at the difference between good quality and cheap products and why to choose quality over price. We also get into health benefits, usage instructions, dosage, and some of the history of essential oil use by humans. Most of our listeners are probably aware of essential oils as a product, if they do not already use them, but it only now that the real benefits of the substances are coming to light and they are becoming a mainstream health item. This episode provides plenty of motivation and reasons for why you should be incorporating oils in your daily routine. So do not miss out. Tune in to hear it all!

“Back then, I really didn’t understand that fragrance is actually a very different thing than smell. A lot of essential oils are really just synthetic fragrances disguised as essential oils” — @LifeBySamWright [0:05:04.2]

“Our sense of smell is our most primitive sense. I mean, it developed very early on and it’s a survival tool.” — @LifeBySamWright [0:13:28.1]

Today on the show we have nutritionist Dr. Lily Nichols to talk to us all about nutrition during pregnancy. Dr. Nichols’ latest book is titled Real Food for Pregnancies, and she is a firm believer in the whole-foods, low-carb diet associated with the Paleo community. She is, however, often hesitant to describe her nutritional approach as Paleo per se, as it possesses some connotations and tends to alienate certain sectors, but there is definitely an amount of overlap between her suggested diets and a classic Paleo approach. During our chat we go over her book and look at all the important areas of maternal health, including some beyond the realms of diet. We discuss food aversions, carb cravings, and fermented foods, as well as looking at contested topics such as raw fish, exercise, and supplements. For the most part, Dr. Nichols really stresses the importance of mindfulness through pregnancy and taking care of your body in a very important, special, and potentially stressful time. So if you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy, or could ever be thinking about pregnancy, then this episode is for you and the ones who love you! Tune in to get it all!

  • Understanding healthy exertion versus over doing it.

On today’s episode we have Dr. Shawn Baker, the founder of Carnivore Training Systems. We’ll be talking to Dr. Baker about all things meat and why he believes in a diet comprised of 100-percent red meat. Now, our listeners are probably already open to or enjoying a high fat, high meat diet, but Dr. Baker definitely takes this to the next level, as you will hear. Shawn Baker started out as a medical student before dropping out to play rugby in New Zealand. He worked in the Air Force and then went back to medical school. Through this time and beyond, he was always taking part in highly competitive sports and pushing his body to its limits, and through many experiments and observations he has arrived at what he calls the carnivore diet. You might be asking yourself: What about fiber? What about greens? What about berries? But all will be revealed and we at PMR think it is worth sticking around and hearing what he has to say. Tune in to hear it all!

  • Overlaps between the keto diet and the carnivorous diet.
  • Why you might gain or lose weight on this diet depending on your body.

  • Why you might want to cook and eat less if you are eating only red meat.
  • Dr. Baker’s kids’ diet and applying this plan for younger persons.

  • Ways to measure your body's functions during a 30 day trial of the carnivore diet.
  • Supplementation and speculation around things that you might miss out on.
  • Different genes and their ability to handle this diet from an evolutionary perspective.
  • What type of person is this diet well-suited to?
  • Success for women on this carnivorous diet plan and why it is not impossible.
  • How Dr. Baker envisions the diet being used by different people according to their needs.
  • The Carnivore Training System and what the plan includes.
  • Different training plans for different sports and how this might fit in.
  • And much more!

Tweetables:

“I don’t think there’s a big problem with it quite honestly. You know, I think it’s more social acceptance, more than anything. I think nutritionally, it’s fine.” — Dr. Shawn Baker [0:27:15.1]

On this week’s show we welcome Natalie, otherwise known as That Afro Paleo Girl on Instagram. Natalie is a recent friend that I made on Instagram. She has a great account, a fascinating story with the Paleo diet and lifestyle, and she, you could say, challenges the “norm” when it comes to the Paleo community. Natalie and I caught up in busy Toronto on a recent trip where we got together to talk about some things that we have never talked about before on the podcast. In this episode, Natalie shares her struggle with a very rare autoimmune disease called lichen planopilaris, which is a rare form of alopecia, and how Paleo eating has helped her. We learn more about how she was able to find information, support, and a community through social media through this autoimmune disease and why she chose to combat this disease using Paleo. We also talk about the lack of diversity, at least visibly online, in the Paleo community and how we can maybe work to fix that to create a more inclusive culture. Natalie has an extremely positive outlook on life, and if you’re looking for any form of inspiration, this is an episode for you.
