This week, we had originally planned on featuring an interview with Jen Reissman of One Stop Paleo shop, but we couldn't wait to share what we recorded a couple days ago. It's a conversation with Dr. Andy Galpin, a professor at the Center for Sport Performance at California State University and Director of their Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory.

We met at Paleof(x) while moderating a panel called "Swole by Science". He was a featured panelists that struck us by his ability to take complex physiological processes, like how muscle contractions occur thanks to millions of tiny protein filaments called actin and myosin, and to break them down into an understandable and relatable form.

The plan going into this interview was to get Dr. Andy to reiterate the points he made during the panel discussion, but what we didn't expect is to get into some seriously awesome side conversations.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • The nature of academia.
  • Why mediocre athletes make great researchers and what it's like to really train superstar pro athletes.
  • What his father and grandfather taught him about extreme responsibility.
  • How to cut through the "smoke and mirrors" of health marketing.
  • The difference between knowledge and wisdom.
  • How he went from being a Paleof(x) skeptic to a full on fan.
  • And, of course, how muscles work, what they're made of, and how to make them bigger.

On last week's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we had a great conversation with professional obstacle course racer Hunter McIntyre. We dove deep into Hunter's past and how he overcame difficulties with school and societal expectations to become who he is today.

It was a great conversation full of incredible stories as well as practical takeaways for crushing obstacle course races as well as the hurdles life itself throws your way.

At the end of the episode, we mentioned that we would be previewing an episode of Hunter's podcast, the Obstacle Dominator show that he co-hosts with Paleo Magazine Radio alum Ben Greenfield, so that's what you'll be hearing today.

The episode you'll be listening to features Hunter and Professional Racing Coach Dennis Welch.

They discuss the evolution of Obstacle Racing and how it is now attracting serious athletes and professionals from other sporting domains like Randy Moss and Lance Armstrong, Coach Dennis' favorite training implements and how he cultivates future Hunter McIntyre's by working with youth athletes.

OPTIMAL NUTRITION WITHOUT COMPROMISE
DnxBar.com

At some point in human history, physical movement became a luxury and gyms opened up to serve exercise to the masses. As our lifestyles got worse, so did our health, and as statistics for obesity rose, some of us continued to dive into the growing exercise industry.

Host Tony Federico has been in the fitness industry for ten years and when not podcasting, is the director of a fitness center in Jacksonville Florida serving approximately 500 members and offering a variety of services such as group exercise classes, personal training, massage, free weights, and cardio training equipment. In the past, he coached crossfit and thinks a large part of the crossfit movement is a protest of the traditional fitness model, no pun intended. But going beyond crossfit, there seems to be a growing number of people interested in even more extreme departures from the fitness norm.

Obstacle racing, mud running and super spartan events range in size and scope but all advertise how completely dirty you will be when you finish. Far from our sanitary "regular" lives, mud running is a wild romp through physical, mental, and spiritual hurdles.  It totally sucks, but that's the point. Obstacle races take us out of our comfort zone and we pay good money for it. For some participants, this is an occasional catharsis, but for others, it's something more.

Today's guest, Hunter McIntyre, is widely considered to be one of the best obstacle course racers in the world. Sponsored by the Spartan Race organization and Reebok, he travels around the world, putting on a display of incredible attitude, confidence, and primal energy wherever races.

On today's show we discuss:

  • Growing up as a wild child, dropping out of college, and training as a lumberjack.
  • Learning about nutrition from Tim Ferris' book the 4-hr body.
  • How he ran his first spartan race, slightly buzzed, in his underwear, and still finished in the top 10 in a field of 8,000.
  • What it took to become a professional obstacle course racer.
  • How he trains to be the best in the world.
  • Why he's now spending his time cross-country skiing across Greenland and running across the Moab desert.

One of the very specific benefits of being Paleo podcasters is that we occasionally receive packages of meat in the mail. For some, this might seem odd, but for us it's about as exciting as christmas day. We tear into the cardboard and foam packaging anticipating what sort of meaty delights are hidden inside and given that Paleo is all about quality grass-fed, sustainably sourced, humanely raised, heritage breed meats we're rarely disappointed but sometimes, there's that rare occasion where we encounter a game changer.

This is what happened after we got a package from The Piggery, a pastured pork collective based out of Ithaca, New York. Their rosemary thyme rubbed pork chops were a revelation, pork unlike any we've ever experienced, more like beef or steak than pork, and after that first bite we had to know how they did it, and after this episode of Paleo Radio bites, you will too.

On today's bite we chat with Piggery owner Brad Marshall who shares some of his secrets to making magical pork products.

When we think of physicians we typically think of doctors in white coats and when we think of medicine, we typically think of prescription pharmaceuticals.

But this particular form of healthcare, one which predominates in contemporary Western culture, is actually a relatively new phenomenon which only took shape in the past 100 or so years. So before the white coats and before the drugs what did people do when they got sick?

Using the plants, animals, and minerals around them, ancient peoples were remarkably adept at maintaining health and often incorporated physical, mental, and spiritual practices into a holistic way of life. One example of a traditional healthcare system, and one which predates our western medical model by thousands of years, is ayurveda.

Developed by vedic culture of ancient India, Ayurveda, translates literally as "the wisdom of life".  In Ayurveda, health is a vital, energetic, and balanced state of being, rather than just the absence of disease, and ayurvedic practitioners use a variety of diagnostic methods to customize health prescriptions for each patient's individual needs.

Ayurvedic teachings were originally passed from one practitioner to another by apprenticeships and oral traditions, but they were eventually codified around 300 BC in a sacred text known as the Rig Veda.Since then, knowledge of Ayurveda has spawned thousands of books, health retreats, blogs, and beyond. Thanks in large part to it's effectiveness, this ancient health practice has found a home in the modern age.

On today's show, we're joined by Ayurveda expert, Dr. Akil Palanisamy, who is also a Harvard trained physician. His new book, "The Paleovedic Diet", combines the best of Western medicine, ayurveda, and paleo into a complete program that will help readers to burn fat, increase energy, and reverse disease.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript.

On today's show we discuss:

  • The three primary body types or doshas of Ayurvedic medicine.
  • How knowing your specific dosha and it's tendencies can help you optimize your diet and exercise routine.
  • Why he thinks that functional medicine is shifting the balance of healthcare back to prevention.
  • The cutting edge benefits of traditional herbs and spices like turmeric, ginger, clove, and black pepper.
  • Actual case studies where his clients have healed chronic health conditions by incorporating Paleovedic principles.

In April 2015 we interviewed Nick Mares, an 18 year old entrepreneur who, along with his brother Justin, had just launched a food startup called Bone Broth's Co. When we last talked to Nick, the company had just secured a contract with a co-packer who could produce bone broth to their exacting standards. It had been a long process, with many ups and downs, and if you want to listen to this episode first, check out Paleo Magazine Radio Episode 81, titled Startup Paleo.

Today we're checking in with Nick to see how far the company has come in the past year. We think you're going to find that it's grown exponentially.

PMR Episode 128 Feature Image

Every four years, the elite athletes from all across the globe gather to compete in the Olympic games. Those 17 days are filled with triumph, tragedy, heartbreak, and exaltation. Some rise, some fall, and all of us are entranced.

Most of us watch the spectacle with a sense of awe, a feeling that we are witnessing feats that are incredible, impossible for mere mortals, but for some, watching the Olympics ignites a deep hunger, a drive, and a purpose.

For every Olympian that competes in the games, there are hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions more who dedicate themselves each and every day to the goal of competing, of winning, of proving themselves to the world and becoming an Olympic athlete.

Today's guest, Joseph Seaman is one of those hopefuls. Born in the UK, Joe now lives in Austin Texas where he trains and competes in the sport of rowing.

From afar, rowing is a graceful endeavor, with streamlined boats gliding across the water, but if you zoom in closer, you'll see that it is a brutal sport that pushes the body and mind to it's limits.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How he was introduced to the sport.
  • What it's like to work a 9 to 5 job while training for the Olympics.
  • The key elements of rowing technique.
  • How eating Paleo has helped fuel his athletic performance.
  • Why rowing is the perfect high-intensity exercise.
  • How you can implement rowing into your routine.

Regular listeners of this show know who Diana Rogers is, but if you don't, she's the author of two books, The Homegrown Paleo Cookbook and Paleo Lunches and Breakfasts On The Go, a podcast host, a farmer, and a regular contributor to Paleo Magazine. Diana has also been working diligently for the past few years to complete her education as a Registered Dietitian.

Getting your RD is no joke, it is a lot of work and requires serious commitment especially when you have multiple businesses and a family to take care of as well.

Diana persevered through a slew of challenging situations while going through this process, but ultimately prevailed and is now officially a Paleo RD.

On today's show, Diana tells the story of how she made it happen, which Paleo experts encouraged her along the way, and how she plans to change the nutritional world from the inside out.

PMR Special Report - 2016 Paleo f(x)

This past weekend was the fifth annual Paleo f(x) conference, and as usual, it was bigger and better than ever before. With dozens of lectures, mastermind panels, cooking demos, and hundreds of vendors it's a veritable Paleo wonderland, but the best part is the people. If you walk in any direction, it's only a matter of seconds before you run into someone exceptional, and that’s not being hyperbolic. That's literally how today's show was recorded.

With a portable mic at the paleo magazine booth, we picked a direction, started walking, and grabbed the first person we came across. The result is a slew of on the spot interviews and conversations that feature everyone from a 14 year old Paleo blogger to a UFC superstar. Since everything was recorded on site, and right in the middle of the action, there is a good amount of ambient noise, but this is what it's like at Paleo f(x). There's always something going on and it's hard to decide what to pay attention to. Inevitably you'll get pulled into someone's orbit and have a conversation you'll never forget.

This is the closest you'll get to Paleo f(x) without actually attending, which we obviously recommend, and if you missed this year's show, or if you were there and just can't wait to go back, this will hopefully hold you over until 2017.
