PMR Episode 128 Feature Image

The Paleo community is, by and large, a secular universe. We frame our perspectives on health and healing in terms of evolutionary mismatches, and lean heavily on science to explain the unfolding of our lives, But most of the worlds population has another world view, one that places god at the center of the universe.

It's often assumed that these two worlds, the secular and the spiritual, are mutually exclusive, but is that necessarily true? Can someone believe in the almighty and in science?

Today's guest, Jordan Rubin, is the author of the international best-selling Maker's Diet books, and is sometimes referred to as America's Biblical Health coach. Jordan's studies of naturopathic medicine, nutrition, and scripture led him to conclusions about diet and health that will sound very familiar to even part-time Paleos.

Click Here for the full transcript

On today's show Jordan and I discuss:

  • How he recovered from a chronic wasting disease that left him wheelchair bound and near death at the age of 19.
  • What he did to turn a part-time job at a health food store into a highly successful career.
  • His favorite thing about running a grass-based farm.
  • Why "juicing" should really be replaced by "brothing”.
  • Why he's so excited about "ancient nutrition"

Gluten is the main protein found it wheat and it's what gives bread its chewiness and pastries their texture, but despite gluten's gustatory appeal, this particular plant protein has been increasingly implicated in a wide range of health conditions ranging from gut related gluten allergies and celiac's disease to neurological conditions like ALS, epilepsy, and autism.

Recently however, Examine.com, the internet's only independent encyclopedia on supplementation and nutrition, broke down a new study which found another reason why you might want to reconsider eating gluten, and to explore why, we're joined by the director of Examine.com Kamal Patel in another installment of Smart Supplementation.

PMR Episode 127 Feature Image

We've seen more than our fair share of gimmicky abdominal exercise machines and over-the-top core training routines. These products and programs consistently promise miraculous results. Six packs in six weeks, inches off your waist with no effort, or improved posture and athletic performance. Do they really work well? Slick marketing can mislead us with doctored before and after photos. Real scientific inquiry is not so easily deceived. In the spirit of deconstructing core training we brought in a real expert on the subject, Dr. Mike T. Nelson.

Dr. Mike holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology, a BA in Natural Science and an MS in Mechanical Engineering, so he definitely knows his stuff.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How he went from building actual ray guns to studying exercise science.
  • What the core really is and how your current training program is affecting it.
  • The difference between training for life versus training for the gym.
  • Why a gymnastics hollow position might be a better core exercises than a CrossFit GHD sit-up.
  • What your squat tells you about core stability.
  • What core training equipment actually works.

While competing in Korean Crossfit, weightlifting, and powerlifting competitions, Kenneth Chung discovered Paleo but while he was excited to embrace this new lifestyle, he also discovered that sourcing grass-fed meat wasn't easy.

A chance job assignment consulting for an international meat packing company gave him a crash course in the meat industry, and in 2012, he joined the team behind Bos Creek, a subscription box service that shipped customized boxes of grass-fed meat nationwide.

Always the competitor, Kenneth knew he could do better, and with their just launched Meat Dorks kickstarter campaign, he hopes to change the meat delivery game with source verification, Whole Animal Journeys, and even greater customer customization.

Today on Paleo Radio Bites we're joined by Kenneth Chung, creator of Meat Dorks, to find out more about the project, their mission, and how to cook zabuton, the most popular cut of beef in Japan.

PMR Episode 126 Feature Image

Kids today are expected to sit still, pay attention, and behave like little adults and when they don't, they're diagnosed with ADD and medicated with stimulant drugs. But can you really blame them when most of their calories come from processed food and most of their fun comes from a computer or smartphone screen?

Just as adults get sick when their modern lifestyles run counter to their ancient DNA kids too suffer and what makes it all worse is the sad fact that most of the medical and educational establishment hasn't made this connection. Thankfully however, some doctors are breaking rank and trading in their prescription pads for cooking classes.

One practitioner who exemplifies this is Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein, a board-certified adult and child neurologist, lifelong foodie, and environmental activist, who from her New York City based practice, has successfully treated hundreds of children with neurological issues with an integrative approach, that includes functional medicine, herbs, mind-body techniques, and homeopathy.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

On today's show we discuss:

  • How she became interested in the field of psycho-neuro immunology.
  • Why she is concerned about use of stimulant drugs to treat pediatric behavior and attention disorders.
  • How she started to use things like food, outdoor time, and dirt to treat her patients.
  • The life-changing transformations she's seen with her approach.
  • The childcare revolution she hopes to start with her new book The Dirt Cure Growing Healthy Kids with Food Straight from Soil.

When Aimee Brouillard was a child, she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and was told that she would never be able to participate in the sports, games, and activities other children her age were able to do.

This advice never sat well with Aimee, and through years of dedicated work learning how to condition, strengthen, and understand her body she has gone on to compete in endurance events like triathlons and has recently found a new passion in strongman competition.

Today on Paleo Radio Bites we're joined by Strongwoman Aimee to talk about her journey from scoliosis to strongman and how the Paleo movement is progressing in her home country of Canada.

Turning potential energy into real results takes a strategy, and with his new book The Perfect Day Formula - How to Own the Day and Control Your Life, fitness and productivity expert Craig Ballantyne shares his winning secrets for success.

Whether it was through her books, her blog, or her podcasts, chances are pretty good that you've heard of Sarah Fragoso, the human dynamo behind the blockbuster Paleo brand, Everyday Paleo. Through her work, we've learned how to cook as a family, we've traveled to Italy, to Thailand, and have found ways to talk to kids about healthy eating. On top of all that, she also co-owns and operates a gym with her husband John, JS Strength and Conditioning, and homeschools her three sons. If this sounds like a full plate, you're right, it is, and after years maintaining this grueling pace, something had to give.

On April 20th, 2016 Sarah published her final blog post on EverydayPaleo.com, and on today's show Sarah and I discuss:

PMR Episode 124 Feature Image

The word "cider" has it's roots in the ancient hebrew word sekar, or "strong drink" and as apples moved from the mountains of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the "strong drink" made from the fermented juice of apples followed.

Cider was brought to America by the pilgrims, and for many years, cider was the beverage of choice for peasants and presidents alike. During the early part of the 19th century however, prohibitionists turned their ire towards cider, smashing kegs and uprooting orchards.

For decades, American cider production was almost nonexistent, but now we are on the cusp of a veritable cider boom. More and more people are looking for alternatives to beer, and as a naturally gluten free product, cider is happy to oblige.

On today's show, we discuss the nature of today's cider business with Robert and David Cordtz, the father and son team behind the Sonoma Cider Company.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

Sonoma Ciders feature bold flavors like sarsaparilla vanilla and Kentucky bourbon and in our conversation we discuss...

  • How the pair got into the cider business.
  • Their process for developing new flavors.
  • How hundreds of pounds of habanero peppers made their way into one of their limited runs.
  • Why they think their particular brand of uncompromising, craft ciders appeal to the palates of foodies and health fanatics alike.

While some people are satisfied with the grain-fed, CAFO raised, industrial meat that is passed off as beef in much of our restaurants and grocery stores, there is a growing demand for something different.

In the past, that "something different" might have taken the form of tracking down a local farmer to arrange for the purchase of a "cow share", a whole, half, or quarter steer that required significant freezer space and a big investment.

While this, or better yet, growing your own, likely represents the gold standard for grass-fed beef acquisition, many people don't live in agricultural areas, so access is limited. And even if you do live in a rural part of the country that hosts large domestic herbivores, there's no guarantee that the farmer is following grass-fed and grass-finishing standards, or that he or she will even sell to you.

Thanks to the internet however we now have a third option, from the comfort of our own home, we can purchase carefully selected grass-fed and grass-finished meats and have them delivered right to our door.

One such service is getbutcherbox.com, a new type of meat delivery service that started off as a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign and is now shipping customers a new, carefully curated box of meat, steaks, bacon, short ribs, and the like, each and every month.

Today on Paleo Radio bites we're joined by Michael Salguero CEO of Butcher Box, to find out more about his company, the meats, and some of his favorite recipes.

PMR Episode 123 Feature Image

Everybody knows that mom does it best; whether it's her homemade lasagna, chocolate chip cookies, apple pie, or if you're Tessemae Vetter, a signature salad dressing.

As the mom of 3 active boys, Tessemae had to figure out a way to get her kids to eat their veggies. She succeeded by whipping up a simple combination of lemon juice, olive oil, mustard, and salt. Tessemae's dressing was not only a hit with her own kids, there are even instances of salad dressing theft perpetrated by her son's friends.

Hearing this story alone would be well worth your time, but what comes next is the real kicker. After years of eating the house dressing, Tessemae's oldest son Greg decided that there really was something special about that signature blend. With a bit of stage craft, Greg convinced Whole Foods, and then his mom to go into business bottling the family recipe and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today we're joined by Tessemae's all natural co-founder, Greg Vetter.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In our conversation we discuss:

  • His experiences as a college athlete.
  • The lightening bolt of inspiration that convinced him that he needed to quit his job and start Tessemae's.
  • How he used a Tupperware of romaine lettuce to convince Whole Foods to carry their product.
  • How he, his pregnant wife, his mom, and his brothers built the business over the course of many late nights and weekends.
  • What it's like now to be running a multi-million dollar company.

PMR Episode 222 Feature Image

If you really want to know why the Paleo lifestyle works so well in combating chronic disease, reversing the aging process, and turning everyday people into fat burning beasts, you'll inevitably encounter a concept called Evolutionary Mismatch. An evolutionary mismatch occurs when our body, a collection of trillions of cells beautifully programmed by millions of years of evolution, encounters something completely unexpected and descends into chaos. In the past evolutionary mismatches arose from natural events, cataclysms like super volcanoes and asteroid impacts, as well as cyclical climate changes, but these mismatches ultimately spurned new evolutions and adaptations. Unfortunately for us modern humans, the radical technological and societal changes that we have initiated have transformed our world, and have changed so many things so quickly that our bodies just can't keep up, and evolutionary mismatches abound.

Eating processed food like substances instead of whole foods is a mismatch. Sitting down all day staring at a computer screen instead of experiencing dynamic movement within mother nature is a mismatch. Replacing our intimate tribal relationships of community and family with text messages is an evolutionary mismatch, and as the process of evolution and natural selection runs its course, millions of us suffer and die from chronic disease and millions more live in states of dis-health. But all hope is not lost Paleo Nation, as someone listening to this podcast and living the Paleo lifestyle, you are part of the solution, and now more than ever, there are resources at your disposal that can help you manage the evolutionary mismatches in your life.

There are books, blogs, podcasts, and even events dedicated to the practice of ancestral health. Today we'll be talking to two proponents to the ancestral health model. J. Brett Smith and Aaron Blaisdell. Both of these guys are so passionate about the subject that they've dedicated countless hours towards organizing one of the premier Paleo events of the year. The Ancestral Health Symposium.

CLICK HERE for the full transcript

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • What inspired Aaron to create the Ancestral Health Symposium.
  • How J.Brett Smith went from being an AHS attendee to becoming their Program Chair.
  • Favorite moments from past years events.
  • The unforeseen consequences that caused the cancellation of AHS 15.
  • Their thoughts about the mainstreaming of Paleo.
  • The role of AHS and other events in the evolution of Ancestral Health.
  • What we can look forward to at this years event which will be taking place at the University of Colorado Boulder campus August 11th to the 13th.

When we're kids, we're told to wash our hands, taught to keep our clothes clean, and to never eat something that has dirt on it. But what if all that sanitation has side effects?

Despite the fact that we're living in what is arguably the most disinfectant happy society to ever walk the face of the earth, many of us still suffer from chronic health conditions, many of which start in the gut. Perhaps all that bacteria, all that dirt, was doing something good for us. Maybe it's time to start getting back to our roots by eating food, and dirt, the way nature intended?

On today's show, we're joined by one of the most vocal proponents of eating dirty, Dr. Josh Axe, author of the brand new book, Eat Dirt: Why Leaky Gut May Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems and 5 Surprising Steps to Cure it.

  • How his mother's illness inspired him to pursue a career in health.
  • The strategy he used to grow his practice.
  • What he learned by working with a wide range of clients, from regular families to professional athletes.
  • His secret to health success.

When Nina Teicholz (author of international best-seller, The Big Fat Surprise) was invited to participate in a panel discussion at the 39th annual National Food Policy Conference taking place this week in Washington DC, she was excited for the opportunity to bring her ideas about food and nutrition to the BIG table. This conference brings together the food policy insiders who create position statements that have far reaching consequences for how our nation eats, and it's hard to argue against the fact that we need to eat better. We're fatter, sicker, and unhealthier than ever.

But, when Nina's co-panelists found out she would be participating, they threatened to drop out of the conference unless she was disinvited, and so she was.

Click Here for the full transcript.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • The events leading up to her invitation and subsequent removal from the food policy panel.
  • How she felt about the news.
  • And what she's doing about it.

PMR Episode 220 Feature Image

One of the idiosyncrasies of the human brain is that it's hardwired to put things into boxes. Not literal boxes necessarily, but figurative boxes. Just think, if you see a person walking past you on the street, you immediately, reflexively, and instinctively categorize them based on qualities like age, gender, skin color, clothing, and attractiveness. From these generalizations, we then extrapolate even further, projecting our own prejudices onto the other person in the form of our expectations about their intelligence, socioeconomic status, and character. In responding to this feature of our primate brains, we can either deny that we do this, or we can actively override our instincts. Doing this takes energy, but it is in this act that we exemplify our humanity.

One person who constantly works to break down boxes, whether it is in the business world or in the gym, is Liz Nierzwicki. Liz is the owner of Solace Yoga Studios. She is an online fitness entrepreneur and the author of the new book, "Happy Healthy Fit: Transform Your Life In 90-Days With The figureFIT! Lifestyle Program".

Click Here for the full transcript

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • Her thoughts on winning the 2015 Paleo f(x) Women's Fitness Challenge.
  • The ins and outs of our human energy systems.
  • Why she would rather run 10 sprints than a half marathon.
  • The effects of training for specificity vs general athleticism.
  • How she has merged mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation with traditional strength and conditioning.
  • The mental blocks that hold us back from success.
  • Her 90 day figure fit lifestyle transformation program.

If you're a health-focused web surfer, you've probably seen a new acronym floating around the interwebs recently. MTHFR, short for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, refers to a gene that produces an important enzyme in the body. This enzyme helps convert the amino acid homocysteine into methionine, an essential amino acid for numerous functions.

Like all genes, MTHFR comes in several variations. Some work better than others, and some don't work at all. Dysfunctioned MTHFR gene could be a contributing factor in a wide variety of illnesses, including vascular disease, neural tube defects, Alzheimer's, dementia, colon cancer, and leukemia, just to name a few. Obviously, this is very concerning, and as a result, genetic testing services, as well as specific websites and coaching services have popped up in response to the MTHFR threat, but is it really a threat? Is MTHFR the new gluten, or is it, like shark attacks and lightning strikes, something that most of us really don't have to worry about?

One outspoken critic of the commercialization of MTHFR treatment is Craig Pickering. Craig is a former world-champion sprinter who currently works as the Head of Sport Science for DNAFit, a company dedicated to providing DNA-based diet and exercise recommendations for both Olympic athletes and everyday folks alike.

In This Episode We Discuss:

  • What MTHFR is and what are it's effects.
  • What your chances of being affected by this genetic mutation are and what you can do about it.
  • Which dietary supplements and even Paleo foods can help those with MTHFR disfunction.
  • What the scientific research really says.
  • The really interesting genetic testing Craig and his team at DNAfit are doing.

PMR Episode 118 Feature Image

It was New York City in the 1960s and Anthony Morrocco, an aspiring hairstylist, had just landed his dream job. He had been taken on as an apprentice of Kenneth's, the Manhattan salon of the world's first celebrity hairstylist, Kenneth Battelle. At Kenneth's, the regulars included the most famous women of the day, and it was not uncommon to see Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, Fay Dunaway or Lauren Bacall at the salon. This was the golden age of style but there's also a dark side to all that glitter.

In the 1930s, the cosmetic industry successfully lobbied for and received exemptions from the FDA for its cosmetic products. This meant that the chemical formulations used in skin moisturizers, perfumes, lipsticks, fingernail polishes, eye and facial makeup, cleansing shampoos, and deodorants did not have to be registered with the FDA and were not subject to pre-market safety analysis. As a stylist, Anthony was constantly exposed to these chemicals, and he question their safety. So, at the age of 27, he walked away from the conventional hair care world and embarked on a quest to find an alternative path. His travels took him across the United States and eventually to Europe where he began to develop his own hair care line based on pure botanical ingredients. When he returned to the US, he launched his all-national products and began using them with clients. The Morrocco Method International company was born.

In This Episode Tony and Anthony discuss:

  • What it was like to cut his teeth in the hair care industry's first celebrity salon.
  • How illness in clients and fellow stylists inspired him to find natural alternatives to conventional hair care products.
  • His interest in esoteric energy work.
  • What his wild crafted 5 elements hair product line can do for your hair.
  • How you can "awaken your roots" and become your own personal hair shaman.

In Paleo Radio Bites episode 33 host Tony Federico interviews Legendary Life Podcast creator Ted Ryce about his Be the Change Movement Kickstarter campaign.

Ted Ryce is a motivational speaker, fitness expert, wellness coach and host of the Legendary Life podcast. He's based out of Miami Beach, and over the years he's worked with celebrities and businessmen like Richard Branson. It hasn't been all glitz and glamour though.

When Ted was 14, his mother died in a car accident, only a few years later, his younger brother Jimmy Ryce was kidnapped, raped and murdered in a high publicity case that led to the creation of the Jimmy Ryce foundation by Ted's father and step mother. The Jimmy Ryce foundation funds the training of bloodhounds to help law enforcement groups find missing people. The foundation is struggling however, and Ted's on a mission to keep the foundation, and it's mission alive.

Urgent Action Needed IconAlong with his partner Giselle Oliveira, Ted has launched a Kickstarter campaign called the Be The Change Movement. Be The Change supporters will receive tools to empower, inspire, and achieve their own personal goals and the money raised will help fund the Jimmy Ryce foundation. Currently, they are at $3,000 of an $8,000 goal. The way Kickstarter works is that if you don't reach your goal you don't get anything. There is about a week left in the fundraising drive, so if everyone listening to this only donated $5, about as much as you'd pay for a coconut milk coffee at Starbucks or kombucha at Whole Foods, The Be The Change Movement will reach it's goal.

I'll Help: Take Me There!

The Bare Bones Broth Cookbook

There's a lot more to recipe writing than meets the eye. Previous blogging experience is certainly helpful, but with a cookbook, the pressure is on to make the reader's experience truly remarkable. Unlike a free blog post, someone paying $20 or $30 for a cookbook expects that they will achieve their desired culinary results right away. Therefore, getting a recipe cookbook ready means rigorously testing every element, scrutinizing the measurements, and refining the process, but perhaps more importantly, it requires that the author use empathy, thinking about cooking from their reader's point of view.

Famous for meticulously testing and retesting recipes for everything from chocolate chip cookies to Tuscan-style beef stew, America's Test Kitchen has built their brand on developing and sharing bulletproof recipes that literally anyone can make, so when I heard that ATK had tackled Paleo, I had to find out more. On today's episode, I'm joined by ATK Chief Creative Officer Jack Bishop.

In this conversation, Jack discusses his background as a food writer and cookbook editor, how many times America's Test Kitchen tests a recipe, and how one ATK author actually developed a rotator cuff injury from stirring 2,000 pounds of test fudge, what it's like for his kids growing up in a household led by 2 professional food writers, where he does his grocery shopping, how ATK heard about Paleo and the approach they took to producing their book "Paleo Perfected", and which perfect Paleo recipes are now in Jack's regular dinnertime rotation.

In America, there's nothing unusual about celebrity chefs. Starting with the incomparable Julia Child, we've seen the rise of giants like Emeril, Mario Batali, and Gordon Ramsay, as well as trend setters and taste makers like Thomas Keller, David Chang, and Wylie Dufresne. We're also familiar with activist chefs like Jamie Oliver who used his platform and reach to challenge the American school system to wake up to real food.

By and large, these chefs are embraced by the media and applauded for their efforts, and on the surface, Australian celebrity chef Pete Evans' story seemed like it would follow a similar trajectory. Along with numerous cookbooks, a decades-long career as a chef and restaurateur, and multiple broadcast television credits, Pete Evans is an outspoken advocate for the paleo approach, but instead of applause, he often receives derision. His critics, a broad coalition that includes tabloid news outlets like the Daily Mail and the Dietitians Association of Australia which said, "Our primary concern is that some aspects of the Paleo diet are inconsistent with the Commonwealth Department of Health's Australian dietary guidelines."

On today's episode of Paleo Magazine Radio, we're joined by Chef Pete Evans in a conversation that goes beyond the headlines, focusing instead on the heart of the matter, his lifelong passion and dedication to empowering and educating with real food. During our conversation, we dive deep into Pete's training as a chef, his first real restaurant job, how Tony Robbins temporarily turned him into a vegan, how Nora Gedgaudas' "Primal Body Primal Mind" changed his life, why it took him more than a year to publicly come out as Paleo, as well as his books, TV shows, and Paleo Way 10-week Transformation Program.
